The Bam earthquake happened on December 26 2003, 5.26 am Iran standard time. This happened in the city of Bam and affected the surrounding Ker man province. This earthquake happened because of the stresses of motion coming from the movement of the Arabian plate moving northwards against the Eurasian plate. The magnitude of this event is 6.6 magnitude. This earthquake had a total death toll of 26,271
people and 30,000 casualties.85 to 90% of the buildings and infrastructure in the Bam area were either damaged or destroyed.75%of the houses was destroyed completely by the earthquake.
Even the Bam citadel which was considered as the strongest standing structure before the quake now,has been destroyed. The earthquake also left a psychological impact on the victims.
The Iranian president urged all the Iranians to help the victims. On the other hand, the Iranian government was conversely criticized for not supplying enough tents. But the government took actions when Bam was constructed. The government established the guiding office for the recovery of Bam.I feel that the government should supply proper building materials for the reconstruction of Bam so that if an earthquake happens again, the buildings will not collapse so easily.
